Service Learning Reflection
Camp Weaver
On the field trip, the Service Learning group helped create a garden for Camp Weaver because the needed one for the kids there. It will help the community by letting kids have a garden to take care of, learn about and eat. I expected it to be entertaining and very productive and it was. I tried to think that what we are doing is helping others and that I should do something to help our community. I painted garden benches, gathered tools, planted pineapples, and cleaned the chicken coop. My peers worked really hard on this project.
Someone who stood out to me was Sam, a camp counselor, who really got people to work hard but in a kind way, I think that is one of the reasons we got so much done. Doing community work makes feel good because I know it makes others happy too.
Something that surprised me was that they were planting pineapples. I just do not normally see many people growing pineapples. I was expecting it to be a little boring because I do not usually like gardening but painting was really fun. I think the garden lacks greenery, but I can not really accuse them of that. The plants need time to grow. I think that this garden will make camp more fun and let the campers have a better experience.
This is not really an issue or problem, the camp just would like a garden for the kids, and they need help to create a garden. I learned how to catch a chicken, because Jaimee, another camp counselor, taught us how. If I could do this project again, I would have more effort into painting benches at first. The first few benches were not done so well.
I thought this project was fun and it showed me how good it felt to help the community. I would like to help the community more often.
